High gas prices fuel local electric-car market

news-journalonline.com -- A Chevron sign advertising $3.71 gasoline on State Road A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea might elicit a groan or exasperated sigh from many passing motorists. But not from Caroline Derensis.

"I laugh," Derensis said. "I laugh my head off."

Derensis' new car has no use for gasoline. Or oil changes, for that matter. Or timing belts.

In March, Derensis was the first to purchase a 2013 Mitsubishi MiEV from Daytona Mitsubishi Kia on Nova Road. The MiEV is an all-electric, battery-powered vehicle that is charged from a home socket rather than fueled at a service station.

"I got tired of paying for gas to get to work," Derensis, a nurse anesthetist who works at Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast, said.

Derensis isn't the only person who has ditched oil.

My utility bill this last summer was already in the 304 hundred dollar range and we keep the temperature set pn 80-83. Could not pay a higher bill.

They will tend to overload the electricity grid and too much of our electricity is still generated by burning Dirty Coal. We need to be pursuing abundant, cheap and clean American natural gas in the forms of CNG and LNG as our primary alternative to all oil based fuels. The U.S. is now the worlds largest producer of natural gas. North America could truly become energy independent.
