??
Who's not driving because of gas prices? I now find it cheaper and far more relaxing to drive than fly to most places I go. Slower yes, but none of the total BS to go through at airports and I can bring whatever I want with me there and back.

There are still plenty of people employed, and plenty of people on the roads, 04tang & jimgraham. Once again, AC-302 is the perceptive one here.

Since people are driving less (less money in their accounts); this is believable.

I had heard on ABC News that auto fatalities were at or below 34K. I guess this is the effect of airbags and high seatbelt compliance rates.

Has got to be the rise in gas prices, no one can afford it so there is less driving, simply put people aren't driving as much.

The main factor being less miles driven because of loss of jobs and income and inability to afford exorbitant fuel prices.

So all that talk about how "55 saves lives" in the 1980s and 1990s was hot air? (or just the government wanting traffic fines?)

well thats because people dont have jobs to buy the overpriced gas= less people on the road= less fatalities.wonder how many millions of $ they spent with tax payers money on that study.

Since highway deaths are on the decline, will the safety nannies back off from laws that only protect drivers from themselves, like mandatory seat belt laws? Somehow, I doubt it.

Still, it surprises me that as a society we can accept nearly 34,000 deaths as a reasonable price to pay for the convenience of having high powered, fast vehicles to get us to work and school and vacation spots. Surely we can bring that number down by being more strict with distracted drivers. I saw a guy texting as he drove today. How long before he Kills someone?
